When people think of Orlando, they often think of Walt Disney World and Disney’s other parks, but Orlando is much more than just Mickey Mouse’s hometown. Orlando also boasts Universal Studios, SeaWorld, and countless other amusement parks. It is home to the Orlando Magic of the NBA and was recently awarded an MLS franchise, the Orlando City Lions. Orlando is also home to the University of Central Florida, one of the largest universities in the country, and several other colleges.
It is impossible to offer a history of Orlando without mentioning Walt Disney. He announced his plan in 1965 and opened Disney World in 1971. The population boomed as a result, doubling from just over 50,000 in 1950 to almost 100,000 in 1970. Tourism became the centerpiece of the local economy, which led to an expansion into the convention industry. Orlando is the second largest convention site in the country, behind only Chicago.
As is the case with much of Florida, Orlando has a very flat landscape and is covered in lakes, the most prominent of which is Lake Apopka, northwest of Orlando.
